Founded in 1998 when a group of African American women began to meet monthly to discuss a "book of the month", share ideas, exchange stories and form a sisterhood of book lovers!
Why an African American Book Club? Most of us have been avid readers all of our lives but for most of our lives there was very little African American authored literature to choose from. So we read James Paterson, Dean Koontz, and others. Though we still occasionally read works by those authors, we are also very pleased to be able to read wonderful stories by and about people of color. Not only have we enjoyed reading the works of established authors, like Pearl Cleage, but also to read and support newcomers such as Trice Hickman and Dr. Daniel Black.
Currently, membership is closed however, visitors are welcome during the year. We invite your interest and are willing to mentor new book clubs. Our motto "Real Divas Read"!
We celebrated our 10th Anniversary on October 18, 2008 by hosting our first book lovers Brunch featuring Mary Monroe; in 2009 Virginia Deberry and Donna Grant were our keynoted speakers; and in 2010 we hosted Dr. Daniel "Omotosho" Black. Each year our audience has grown and we have truly been blesed - and we are still excited - that this event has allowed us to meet so many talented authors.
